The 120-yard house is built up in 2 stages, on a plot of 24 feet by 45 feet. Phase One gives the occupant approx. 1240 square feet, comprising of a large multipurpose public space with attached powder room and small courtyard, and a living / dining space with open kitchen on the ground floor; and one bedroom with attached bath on the first floor. The multi-purpose room on the ground floor can also function as a full-fledged bedroom, because of the attached powder room.
The house is designed to support localized economic activity. The multipurpose room on the ground floor has a separate public entrance from the street and can function as a shop or café.
The adjoining courtyard at the rear functions as a spill-over or service area for the commercial space.
This courtyard also has a vertical garden, which can be used to grow vegetables. As the house expands, the vertical garden also expands vertically.
In Phase Two, a further approx. 760 square feet are added, bringing the total area to about 2000 square feet. The addition gives the occupants one more bedroom with bath on the first floor and one bedroom with bath on the second floor. There is also a lobby space on the second floor which can be used as a small study or for storage.
The house is constructed using light-weight steel columns and beams. The infill can be masonry or drywall with insulation. The steel structure becomes a part of the architectural language, and is visibly exhibited over the main entrance of the house, as well as in the pergola over the terrace.
The street façade has been particularly kept in mind when designing the house, so that the street view with several such houses lined up presents an enchanting scene with an undulating terraced façade. The terraces at different levels also provide the occupants with options for outdoor experience, ensure that there are private outdoor areas, and also present opportunities for engagement with the street below.
